A concrete example

For a 3,800-frame wedding, one photographer imports overnight with 1:1 previews, then culls next morning in two sittings: a 90-minute flag pass (P/X with Caps Lock auto-advance) that clears obvious rejects and marks candidates, then an afternoon pass using Survey view on each burst and the star keys only on flagged picks. Filtering to Picks, she finishes with a gallery read in Grid view before a single slider moves.

Step-by-step: the in-Lightroom cull

1. Import into a dated folder with previews building, embedded for speed or 1:1 if you zoom-check a lot, and let rendering finish first.
2. Pass one, flags only: Loupe view in Library, Caps Lock on, P for pick, X for reject, U to skip; no stars, no zooming except genuine sharpness doubts.
3. Pass two, bursts: select each burst, hit Survey (N), and keep one winner; check eyes and focus at 100% on the winner only.
4. Filter to Picks for the selects pass, cutting redundant beats and confirming story coverage per event block.
5. Deal with rejects deliberately: filter to X, remove from catalog or archive, but keep files until after delivery.

Limitations

Everything above still scales linearly with frame count; Lightroom gives you better ergonomics per decision, not fewer decisions. Big catalogs with thousands of rejected frames also stay slower forever, and preview generation for frames you will reject in half a second is pure overhead.
