Culling is the most file-destructive thing most photographers ever do on purpose: thousands of moves, deletions, or rejections executed quickly, sometimes late at night, sometimes by software. Done against the only copy of a wedding, any error, human or mechanical, is unrecoverable, and weddings cannot be reshot. A backup taken before the first culling decision converts every possible mistake from a catastrophe into an inconvenience. That is why backup verification is step one of the culling workflow checklist, not a separate chore.

A concrete example

A photographer gets home at midnight, offloads one card, and starts culling from the card reader to save time, deleting rejects as she goes. The reader hiccups mid-session and the card's filesystem corrupts. If the card had been fully copied to two drives first, tonight's story is "re-copy and continue"; instead it is a data-recovery bill and a phone call she will dread. The whole scenario is prevented by refusing to cull anything that exists in fewer than two places.

Step-by-step pre-cull backup

1. Offload every card to your working drive the night of the wedding, into the job's originals folder.
2. Make a second copy on different hardware, another drive at minimum; 3-2-1 (three copies, two media types, one offsite) is the standard worth aiming at.
3. Verify, do not assume: compare file counts against the cards and spot-open frames from the start, middle, and end of each copy.
4. Set cards aside unformatted until the wedding is delivered; they are your copy of last resort.
5. Only then begin the cull, working from the drive copy, never directly off a card.

Limitations

Backups protect files, not decisions: nothing here saves you from rejecting the wrong frame, only from losing frames. Verification by spot-check is also probabilistic; corrupt individual files can hide in a take that counts correctly, which is why keeping cards unformatted matters. And a backup that has never been test-restored is a hope, not a plan.
