What the cull actually changes about a file

Sorting a shoot moves or copies files into KEEP, REJECT, or REVIEW folders, and adds a small XMP sidecar file next to each image carrying its rating and color label. Neither of those actions touches the file name. The image data itself is never edited, and the file name attached to it is not something the culling process modifies as part of sorting.

Why this is worth confirming plainly

Some photo software does rename files as part of its workflow, for organizational or cataloging reasons, and it is a reasonable thing to want to know about any tool that is about to run across thousands of your wedding files. Cull AI Studio's behavior on this point is simple: no renaming happens. The file naming convention your camera or your import process already established is what you will still see once the cull finishes.

A concrete example

A photographer's camera produces files such as DSC4821.NEF. After importing a wedding's cards and running Cull AI Studio, that file lands in the KEEP folder still named DSC4821.NEF, now with a DSC4821.xmp sidecar sitting beside it carrying a five-star, green-label rating. Nothing about the original file name changed; only its folder location and the presence of a small metadata file next to it are new.

What does change on disk

• Folder location. Frames are sorted into KEEP, REJECT, or REVIEW folders through a copy or move operation.
• A new sidecar file. Each image gets an XMP file next to it carrying its rating and label, itself following standard XMP naming based on the original file name.
• Nothing else. The original image file, its name, and its pixel data are untouched.

Honest limitations

Because file names are not part of what the cull manages, Cull AI Studio will not help you enforce a custom naming convention or clean up inconsistent file names across two camera bodies; that remains a separate task from culling. If a consistent naming scheme matters to your workflow, it needs to be handled by your import process or renaming tool of choice, before or after the cull, rather than something the culling step takes care of for you.
