Cull AI Studio vs Narrative Select: An Honest Comparison for Wedding Photographers

Narrative Select has earned its reputation. Fstoppers called it "the fastest-growing culling tool" when the Windows version launched, and its assessment interface — eye and focus overlays, the Close-ups Panel that zooms to faces without pixel-peeping — is widely praised. Like Cull AI Studio, it culls locally: Narrative's own comparison page says "Narrative works locally" with "no cloud uploads" and full offline support. So if you've read that either tool is "the private one," be skeptical — both process photos on your machine. The real differences are in personalization, review design, and pricing structure.

Where the two tools actually differ

Assessments vs a personal model. Narrative Select's strength is showing you excellent per-photo information — eye assessments (blinks, looking down), focus assessments, Scenes View grouping with best-frame ranking, a People Filter, and Key Element Detection for non-face scenes. You then make the calls with better information. Cull AI Studio's approach is different: it makes a KEEP/REJECT call on every frame, attaches a confidence score to each decision, routes anything uncertain to a REVIEW pile, and then learns from the corrections you make. Once about 1,000 reviewed decisions are on file, it trains a personal model on your own corrections — never blended with anyone else's data — and your reversals carry double training weight. A candidate model must beat your current one on your own held-out past decisions before it activates, and you can roll back at any time.

What your account stores. A Cull AI Studio account stores exactly two things, neither a photograph: your trained model file and your app settings. Photos, RAW files, previews, and per-photo keep/reject records are never uploaded.

Pricing structure. Narrative uses a four-tier ladder (Lite through Ultra) where culling capability, editing, presets, and seat counts vary by tier. Cull AI Studio has one plan: $19.99/month or $159/year, unlimited shoots and photos, everything included.
