How blur detection actually works

Blur detection is computer vision, not magic. The software analyzes how much fine edge detail and local contrast a frame contains: a sharp image has crisp transitions between light and dark areas, while a blurred one smears those transitions out. Scoring every frame this way lets the software separate the clearly sharp and clearly blurred ends of the spectrum in seconds. The interesting work happens in the middle, where a frame might be soft overall but sharp where it counts, or sharp overall but soft on the subject. A wedding example

Think about a dark reception with a first dance. You shoot 300 frames in low light at slow-ish shutter speeds. Some are hopeless: the couple is a smear from camera shake. Some are perfect. And a good number are the classic wedding middle case, where the couple is sharp but fairy lights and moving guests blur beautifully behind them, or where a deliberate slow-shutter spin shot is blurry on purpose. Pure sharpness scoring would flag those artistic frames; a photographer would keep several of them.

What blur detection catches well

• Camera shake and motion blur across the whole frame.
• Badly missed focus, such as a sharp wall behind a soft couple.
• The worst frames inside a burst, so the sharpest frame of the set stands out.
• Soft frames that look fine as thumbnails but fail at full size, the kind that slip into galleries when you cull tired.

Honest limitations

Sharpness measurement cannot read intent. It does not know that the soft veil shot is a deliberate dreamy frame, that a shallow depth-of-field portrait is supposed to have blurry ears, or that a slightly soft image of a once-in-a-day moment still belongs in the gallery. Any tool that turns a blur score directly into an unreviewable reject will occasionally throw away a photo you wanted. Blur detection should shrink the pile you review, not replace the review.
