AI Culling Software Privacy Comparison: Where Your Clients’ Photos Actually Go

One more thing an honest privacy page must say early: local processing is not a one-company claim. Several culling tools process photos on your machine and say so plainly. If a vendor tells you they're "the only private option," be skeptical — including of us. The useful comparison is more specific: where processing happens, what travels to the vendor's servers, and what their account keeps.

What each vendor says, in their own words

Local-processing tools

AfterShoot — Local. Official wording: "Images are processed locally on your Windows/Mac, and are never stored on our servers." Works offline; internet is needed for onboarding and occasional license validation. It also offers an opt-out of data sharing on the import screen for NDA shoots — which implies some (unspecified, opt-out-able) data sharing exists by default; what exactly is shared wasn't detailed in our research.

Narrative Select — Local. Official wording: "No friction, no cloud uploads: Narrative works locally" and "Offline support: Work anywhere, no internet required."

Photo Mechanic — Local by architecture. It's a manual browser with no AI or cloud component to disclose; there's simply nothing to send anywhere. (Not an explicit vendor privacy claim — an inference from the product's design.)

Optyx — Marketed on-device: "No photos ever leave your device, we never see them, nor do we want to, we don't sell or share the usage statistics with anyone." Unresolved caveat: one third-party review states an internet connection is still needed for the AI analysis. We could not verify the mechanics on official documentation either way — treat as an open question.

Cull AI Studio (ours) — Local. Your wedding photos never leave your computer: scanning, scoring, face and blink detection, and model training all run on your machine, fully offline (the app checks your subscription roughly weekly, with a 7-day offline grace period). The specific claim we ask you to hold us to: the account stores exactly two things, neither of which is a photograph — your trained model file and your app settings. Photos, RAW files, previews, and per-photo keep/reject records are never uploaded. Your personal model is trained only on your own corrections and never blended with anyone else's data.

Cloud and hybrid tools

FilterPixel — Cloud, openly and by design. Official wording: "Drag and drop your RAW or JPEG files directly into your browser. FilterPixel processes everything in the cloud — your computer stays free for other work." That's a legitimate architecture with real benefits (no local hardware load, browser access); it means your files are transferred to and processed on FilterPixel's servers.

Imagen — Hybrid. The desktop app sends lightweight data (smart previews / low-res previews) to Imagen's cloud, AI processes there, and results sync back to your catalog; optional high-res cloud backup exists. Your originals stay local, but previews of them travel to Imagen's servers.

The questions that actually differentiate

Since "local" is a crowded label, ask these of any tool (ours included):

1. Does culling work with the network cable pulled? AfterShoot, Narrative, and Cull AI Studio all say yes on their own pages. This is the simplest self-test a trial lets you run.
2. What does the vendor's account/server keep after a cull? This is where wording gets vague across the industry. Our answer: trained model + settings, nothing else. We did not find equivalently specific published claims from other local vendors in our research — that's not proof they store more; it's a gap worth asking them about.
3. What feeds the AI's training, and is it pooled? Our personal model trains only on your corrections. AfterShoot markets "your shooting style factored in" and offers an NDA data-sharing opt-out; details of what's shared by default weren't in our research.
4. For cloud tools: what's the retention and deletion policy? Not covered by our research — ask FilterPixel and Imagen directly if you're evaluating them under NDA obligations.

Honest bottom lines

• Under strict NDAs or with privacy-sensitive clients, the defensible shortlist from vendors' own wording is AfterShoot, Narrative Select, Photo Mechanic (manual), and Cull AI Studio — with Optyx pending resolution of its internet question.
• FilterPixel and Imagen are not "doing privacy wrong" — they're transparent about cloud processing and trade it for real conveniences. The question is whether your client agreements allow it.
• Our differentiation is the narrow, checkable claim: not "local" (others are too), but an account that stores only a model file and settings, a model trained only on you, and culling that verifiably runs offline — at $19.99/month or $159/year, with a 7-day free trial to test the offline claim yourself.
