Why wedding culling is its own problem

Weddings are unrepeatable, so you shoot through everything: processional, vows, ring exchange, toasts, dance floor. Add safety frames and burst sequences and a single Saturday routinely produces thousands of images across wildly different light — window-lit getting ready, dim church, harsh noon portraits, DJ-lit reception. Every one of those frames needs a decision before you can edit a single photo. If you assume roughly three seconds per manual decision — an assumption, not a study — a 4,500-frame wedding is close to four hours of pure deciding, before retouching even starts. How long culling takes is usually the difference between a two-week turnaround and a six-week one.

A realistic Saturday

Picture a nine-hour wedding shot on two bodies: 4,600 frames on the cards. The couple expects a preview early in the week and a full gallery within your contracted window. Nothing moves until the cull is done, and the cull is the part of the job nobody hired you for. That gap between "cards full" and "ready to edit" is exactly where AI-assisted culling earns its keep.

An AI-assisted wedding culling workflow

1. Back up your cards to at least two locations before touching anything.
2. Point the software at the shoot folder and let it scan every frame locally.
3. Let it group bursts and near-duplicates, flag blur and closed eyes, and sort frames into keep, reject, and review.
4. Work the review pile yourself — these are the genuine close calls.
5. Spot-check a slice of the keeps and rejects until you trust the sort.
6. Export ratings to your editor and edit only the keepers.

What AI cannot do at a wedding

AI does not know that the woman crying in frame 2,340 is the bride's grandmother, that a technically soft dance-floor pan is your signature look, or which twelve frames tell the story of the toast. It ranks technical quality and learns your patterns from corrections; it does not replace curation.
