The portrait cull is a comparison engine

A controlled portrait session — families, seniors, headshots, branding — produces few genuinely bad frames. Your light is set, your focus is deliberate. What it produces instead is redundancy: fifteen frames of the same seated pose, distinguishable only by micro-expressions, blinks, and hand positions. Culling that means holding two nearly identical images in your head at once, over and over, for every pose in the session. It is slow because it is careful, and it repeats with every booking on a calendar that might hold several sessions a week.

A family session, for example

A one-hour family session with two kids yields 500 frames. The six-year-old blinks constantly; the toddler looks at the camera in roughly one frame in five. The keeper of each grouping is the rare frame where all four faces work at once — and finding it manually means checking every face in every frame. A session culling routine

1. Scan the session locally right after backup — a few hundred frames is a fast pass.
2. Let burst grouping collapse each pose's run and surface the strongest frames.

4. Export ratings and build the proof gallery from a selection you have already confirmed.

Limitations in portrait work

Expression is where AI assistance ends and your craft begins. Software can verify eyes are open and the frame is sharp; it cannot see that a smile is genuine rather than held, or that the client's preferred angle is the one they told you about at the consult. Client-specific knowledge stays with you. There is also no portrait-specific AI mode — the analysis is the same one used for weddings — so treat it as a technical-quality and redundancy filter, with preference-based selection layering your tendencies on top as it learns.
