Affordable AI Culling Software for Wedding Photographers: What You Actually Pay

"Affordable" has three different meanings in culling software: the lowest sticker price, the lowest cost at your volume, and free-to-start. They point at different tools, so let's take them in order. (All prices USD as listed at research time, 2026-07-21.)

Cheapest sticker price: Optyx

Optyx Pro is $6.99/month billed annually ($9.99 monthly) — the lowest paid plan we found — plus a free tier with per-shoot photo limits and no card that serves as an indefinite trial. You get autogrouping with best-per-group selection, face/expression/blink/focus analysis with customizable thresholds, and XMP sidecars into Lightroom. Caveats worth the price research: one review says its AI analysis needs an internet connection despite the on-device marketing (we couldn't resolve this), and Apple Silicon runs via Rosetta 2.

Try before you buy: FilterPixel

FilterPixel gates access with a free trial rather than a permanent free tier. After that, it's one plan: Standard, $14.99/month billed annually ($180/year), with unlimited basic AI culling and 20 DeepCull shoots included per year — extra shoots are $7.99 each if you go over. Processing happens in FilterPixel's cloud by design ("processes everything in the cloud"), which is worth weighing alongside the price.

Low sticker, yearly billing: AfterShoot and Narrative

• AfterShoot Select (culling only) is $120/year billed yearly — genuinely cheap for unlimited local culling — with Edit ($360/yr), Retouch ($240/yr), or the Complete bundle ($540/yr, listed $720, save 25%) above it. • Narrative Lite is $10/month for culling only (monthly billing; annual billing is available at narrative.so/pricing). Advanced AI culling requires Standard at $20/month.

Both are local, offline-capable, and well-reviewed. The pattern to notice: the entry price buys the entry tier, and the feature you eventually want may live a tier or two up.

The pricing model that can surprise you: Imagen

Imagen's per-photo editing model ($0.05/photo, $7/month base) with culling as a separate $12/month (billed yearly) or $18/month (billed monthly) add-on to any editing plan can be economical at low volume — and is the model photographers most often report scaling badly in a busy season, which is the stated rationale for Imagen's own unlimited Limitless plan ($129/mo billed annually, "save $432/yr"; the billed-monthly Limitless price isn't published — see imagen-ai.com/pricing).

One-time forever: Photo Mechanic

If "affordable" means "stop paying rent on software," Photo Mechanic's $299 perpetual license (1 year of updates, usable indefinitely after) is the only one-time option among major players — but it's a manual browser with no AI culling. Amortized over years it can be the cheapest tool on this page; it just does a different job.

Where Cull AI Studio sits: $19.99 flat, nothing metered

We're mid-priced by sticker: $19.99/month, or $159/year (about 33% off — two months free). What we'd ask you to price is the structure, not the sticker:

• One plan. Every feature is in it — nothing you want lives a tier up.
• Nothing metered. Unlimited shoots and photos; a 12-wedding October costs the same as a 2-wedding January.
• Every update included. The personal model, confidence-based REVIEW routing, burst/duplicate grouping, XMP handoff, offline culling — all of it, at one price, on Windows and macOS.
• 7-day free trial with full features. Card required up front; nothing is charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel anytime during it from the dashboard.

Against Optyx's $6.99 we cost roughly three times more, and if budget is the deciding constraint, Optyx or AfterShoot's $120/yr Select plan is the honest recommendation. Our case is that a flat, everything-included price with a personal model trained only on your corrections (promotion-gated, with rollback) and photos that never leave your computer is worth $19.99 to a working wedding photographer — and the trial exists so you can test that claim on a real wedding instead of taking our word.
